India – December 11, 2025: Specialty Surgical Oncology Hospital (SSO), a rapidly growing chain of surgical cancer hospitals in Western India, has raised $2.8 million from the Everhope Oncology platform — an initiative backed by Narayana Health, W Health Ventures and 2070 Health. The investment marks a major milestone in SSO’s mission to scale specialised, affordable cancer surgery across India.
India’s Cancer Burden Rising Sharply
India witnesses nearly 2 million new cancer cases each year, making it one of the fastest-growing cancer burdens globally. According to projections, this number could double by 2045, highlighting the urgent need for scalable, high-quality cancer care models across the country.
SSO was established in 2021 by a team of seven cancer surgeons led by Dr. Sanket Mehta, a Tata-trained oncology specialist. The founders aimed to address critical gaps in cancer care, including overcrowded hospitals, long waiting lines, and surgeries often conducted by general surgeons without access to advanced, organ-specific expertise.
SSO’s Model: Organ-Specific Surgical Teams
SSO has emerged as a pioneer in deploying organ-specific surgical teams operating in facilities dedicated exclusively to cancer surgeries. Since its inception, the organisation has expanded to five centres with 20 specialised surgeons, collectively performing more than 20,000 complex oncology procedures.
Speaking about the investment, Dr. Sanket Mehta said:
“SSO began with a simple belief — a patient’s geography or income should never determine their outcome. This partnership allows us to launch three new centres in Mumbai and significantly strengthen our clinical talent, infrastructure and systems to deliver consistently high-quality cancer care.”
Investors Highlight Trust in Doctor-Led Healthcare Innovation
Dr. Pankaj Jethwani, Managing Partner at W Health Ventures, emphasised the value of physician-led healthcare enterprises:
“When physicians design care delivery, they build systems that improve outcomes and bridge long-standing gaps. SSO’s founders embody the mindset of institution builders, not just clinicians. Models built with this depth of expertise are exactly what we aim to support and scale.”
Viren Shetty, Executive Vice-Chairman of Narayana Health, said:
“At Narayana Health, we’ve learnt that designing for the middle-income patient creates resilient and scalable healthcare models. Millions of Indians will live with cancer in the coming decades, and they need quality surgery closer to home—not just in a few major hospitals. SSO’s organ-specific approach aligns strongly with that mission, and we are proud to support them through Everhope as they expand across India.”
Strategic Expansion Across Western India
With this new phase of funding, SSO is set to strengthen its presence in Western India, including Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and key cities across Maharashtra and Gujarat. The organisation remains committed to its core purpose: ensuring that no patient is denied advanced cancer surgery due to financial or geographic barriers.
