Supreme Court’s Big Decision on Stray Dogs: Strict Action Ordered Across India

Supreme Court issues strict orders to remove stray dogs from streets, highways, schools, and hospitals. All states and UTs must ensure proper shelter homes for stray animals.

Supreme Court Takes Major Step Against Rising Dog Bite Cases

In a strong move to tackle the growing problem of stray dog attacks, the Supreme Court of India has directed all state governments and union territories to remove stray dogs and animals from streets, highways, and public places.

This major order comes amid a rise in dog bite incidents across the country. The Court emphasized that public safety must be the top priority.

Three-Judge Bench Issues Strict Guidelines

The directive was given by a three-judge bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Sandeep Mehta, and Justice NV Anjaria.

The bench ordered all municipal bodies, state authorities, and the NHAI to work together in clearing stray dogs and animals from public areas.

“All stray animals must be removed from roads, highways, and national highways,” the Court said, stressing the need for strict and immediate action.

Highway Monitoring Teams to Be Formed

The Supreme Court also directed the formation of Highway Monitoring Teams. These teams will capture and safely relocate stray dogs and animals to authorized shelter homes.

Authorities have been asked to ensure that the animals are vaccinated and properly cared for, but not released back into public spaces.

Stray Dogs Banned from Schools and Hospitals

The Court further stated that stray dogs should be removed from educational institutions, hospitals, bus stands, and railway stations.

Even after vaccination, stray dogs must not be released in the same areas again. Instead, they should be kept permanently in shelter homes.

Public Places Must Be Free from Stray Dogs

The top court clearly said that stray dogs must not be allowed to roam freely in public areas anymore. The justices expressed concern over the alarming rise in dog bite cases and underlined the urgent need for enforcement.

The next hearing in this case will take place on January 13.

Strict Implementation Expected Across States

This landmark ruling signals the start of a nationwide crackdown on stray dogs and animals. It will be crucial to see how state governments and civic bodies implement the Supreme Court’s order in the coming months.
