“Ukrainian President hints he will not seek re-election, focusing entirely on ending the Russia-Ukraine war.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he is ready to resign from office once the Russia-Ukraine war ends, admitting that the conflict has left his country “devastated.”
In a major statement, Zelensky emphasized that peace is more important than power, and he has no plans to stay in office indefinitely.
Speaking to Axios, Zelensky said, “My goal is to end the war, not to keep running for office.” The president also made it clear that he will not contest the next election, which has been delayed due to the ongoing conflict. Ukraine has not held presidential elections since the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, and Zelensky is facing increasing pressure to announce a date.
Zelensky, who came to power in 2019, became a global symbol of resistance after Russia’s invasion. However, Moscow has repeatedly called him an “illegitimate” leader and accused him of being a Western puppet installed to destabilize Russia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has even said the Kremlin would reject any future peace agreement signed by Zelensky.
At the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this week, Zelensky warned that the world is entering “the most destructive arms race in human history.” He urged world leaders to take immediate action against Russia, accusing President Vladimir Putin of planning to expand the war deeper into Europe.
The Ukrainian president also criticized international institutions like the United Nations, saying they had failed to stop wars in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan. According to Zelensky, “Only weapons and allies can guarantee security. International law alone is not enough.”
Just a day before Zelensky’s speech, former U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the UNGA and voiced strong support for Ukraine. Trump said he believes Kyiv can reclaim all the territories lost to Russia, a major shift from his earlier position calling for concessions to end the war.
Zelensky’s latest statement is being seen as a clear signal that he will step aside once peace is achieved, marking a potential turning point in Ukrainian politics. As the war drags on with no end in sight, his focus remains firmly on securing peace and rebuilding a war-torn Ukraine.
