New Delhi 05/06/25 : Indian Railways is bringing a big change to the Tatkal ticket booking process. Very soon, passengers will need to verify their identity using e-Aadhaar while booking Tatkal tickets. This step is being taken to stop fake bookings and ensure only real passengers get the tickets.
The IRCTC has already removed over 2.5 crore fake user IDs being used by touts and agents to book tickets unfairly. With Aadhaar authentication, the Railways aims to reduce misuse and make last-minute travel easier for genuine passengers. The update is expected to roll out by the end of this month.

In a major step to curb black marketing and unauthorized bookings, Indian Railways has announced that Aadhaar-based e-authentication will soon be mandatory for booking Tatkal train tickets. The initiative is aimed at ensuring transparency, reducing fraudulent bookings, and benefiting genuine passengers looking for last-minute reservations.
🔍 Why This Rule?
The decision comes in the wake of a massive clean-up operation by IRCTC, during which nearly 2.5 crore fake user IDs were deactivated. These IDs were being misused by touts and agents, blocking Tatkal tickets within seconds and reselling them at inflated prices.
As per railway officials, this Aadhaar verification process will eliminate fake accounts and ensure that only genuine travelers can book Tatkal tickets.
🛂 What Will Change?
Passengers booking Tatkal tickets will now have to complete Aadhaar e-verification at the time of booking. This will require linking the Aadhaar number to the IRCTC account and completing an OTP-based or biometric verification process.
According to official sources, this new Aadhaar verification system is expected to roll out by the end of this month.
✅ Benefits of the Move
- ✔️ Prevents black marketing of Tatkal tickets
- ✔️ Stops the misuse of booking bots and multiple fake IDs
- ✔️ Ensures fair access to Tatkal seats for genuine users
- ✔️ Adds an extra layer of identity verification and security
📢 Official Statement
An IRCTC spokesperson stated:
“This move is part of our broader strategy to improve passenger convenience and booking fairness. Aadhaar-based verification will ensure only one ID per person and help us monitor suspicious activity more effectively.”
🔗 How to Prepare
Users are advised to:
- Log in to their IRCTC account.
- Go to profile settings and update Aadhaar details.
- Complete e-KYC via OTP or biometric verification.
- Ensure the Aadhaar name matches the name used in bookings.
Failing to link Aadhaar may result in inability to book Tatkal tickets once the rule is implemented.
