Maharashtra Tiger Attack: Four Women Killed While Collecting Tendu Leaves in Chandrapur Forest

Chandrapur Breaking News | Bureau Report Khabar 24 Express | Maharashtra News

A tragic incident has shocked Maharashtra after a tiger attack claimed the lives of four women in Chandrapur district on Friday morning. The victims were reportedly collecting tendu leaves in a forest area near Gunjewahi village in Sindewahi tehsil when the deadly attack took place.

According to forest officials, the incident occurred nearly 70 kilometers from the Chandrapur district headquarters.

A group of women had entered the forest early in the morning to gather tendu leaves, which are widely used as natural wrappers for traditional hand-rolled bidis. While they were busy collecting leaves inside the forest, a tiger suddenly attacked them.

Officials confirmed that four women lost their lives in the attack. The deceased have been identified as Kavdabai Mohurle (45), Anitabai Mohurle (40), Sunita Mohurle (38), and Sangeeta Chaudhary (50). All four women were residents of Gunjewahi village.

Forest department sources stated that it is still not clear whether the tiger attacked all four women at the same location and time or in separate spots inside the forest area. The brutal incident created panic among villagers and nearby communities dependent on forest produce for livelihood.

Soon after receiving information about the attack, a team of forest officials rushed to the spot and began an investigation. Chief Conservator of Forests (Chandrapur Circle) R.M. Ramanujan said that more details would emerge after the completion of the panchnama and field inspection.

Chandrapur district is known for frequent human-wildlife conflict incidents due to its dense forest zones and tiger population. Local residents have repeatedly raised concerns about safety while entering forests for daily livelihood activities such as collecting tendu leaves and firewood.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing challenge of human-animal conflict in Maharashtra’s forest regions, especially in areas surrounding tiger habitats.
