Adani Gets 1,050 Acres in Bhagalpur for ₹1/Year – PM Modi’s “Plant a Tree” Campaign Under Fire

Gautam Adani has been granted 1,050 acres of land in Bhagalpur, Bihar, for just ₹1 per year. Over 1 million trees are set to be cut, raising serious concerns about environmental destruction. Critics are questioning PM Modi’s “One Tree for Mother” initiative, calling it a political stunt ahead of elections.

In a move that has sparked outrage across Bihar, Gautam Adani’s group has been handed 1,050 acres of land in Bhagalpur on a lease of ₹1 per year for setting up a power plant. Environmentalists and opposition parties have raised serious concerns, accusing the government of sacrificing forests, farmers, and public welfare to benefit corporate interests.

The land acquisition will reportedly lead to the destruction of more than 1 million trees, intensifying fears of ecological imbalance and loss of biodiversity. Locals in the Pirpainti area of Bhagalpur claim they were forced to sign documents with pencils and later saw these altered, under duress, to transfer their land. When villagers protested, police allegedly detained them instead of addressing their concerns.

PM Modi’s “One Tree for Mother” Campaign Under Scrutiny

Critics are asking a critical question: How does cutting down 1 million trees align with PM Modi’s popular “One Tree for Mother” campaign?
Opposition leaders argue that while the Prime Minister promotes tree plantation across the country, this project directly contradicts his environmental promises. Protesters are demanding to know whether this massive tree felling is being done for Adani’s profit rather than for the welfare of the people or nature.

Opposition Slams BJP Ahead of Elections

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera has strongly criticized the government, stating:

“The BJP claims to care for trees and the environment but is handing over thousands of acres of land and cutting millions of trees for private corporations like Adani. When votes are at stake, everything is sold out.”

He further added:

“Land owned by the people, coal in their backyard, and still they are being sold expensive electricity at ₹6.75 per unit while other states get it for ₹3–4. This is not governance, it’s exploitation.”

Why This Could Hurt BJP in Upcoming Elections

Election analysts believe this controversy could become a major campaign issue. With Bihar heading toward elections, environmental destruction, land grabbing, and corporate favoritism are becoming hot-button topics. Voters are increasingly asking:

  • Is this government prioritizing big businesses over local communities?
  • How can tree plantation slogans hold weight when forests are being destroyed?
  • Why are farmers being pushed out of their lands for corporate gains?

This incident is being seen as a significant factor that could fuel anti-incumbency sentiment, especially among rural voters and youth concerned about climate change and livelihoods.
