Netanyahu’s Corruption Trial Intensify: Trump Calls It a Witch Hunt, Israeli PM Faces Losing Office if Convicted

Jerusalem, June 27, 2025 – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political career is hanging by a thread as corruption, fraud, and breach of trust trials continue to haunt him. The Israeli judiciary is advancing steadily towards verdicts in the three major corruption cases (known as Case 1000, Case 2000, and Case 4000) against him.

What are the Cases Against Netanyahu?

  1. Case 1000 (Gifts Affair):
Netanyahu is accused of receiving lavish gifts including expensive cigars, champagne, and jewelry worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan and Australian billionaire James Packer, allegedly in return for political favors.
  2. Case 2000 (Media Collusion Case):
He allegedly negotiated with the owner of Israel’s leading newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth for favorable media coverage in exchange for weakening a rival newspaper through legislation.
  3. Case 4000 (Bezeq-Walla Affair):
Perhaps the most serious, this case accuses Netanyahu of pushing regulatory decisions that benefited telecommunications giant Bezeq while ensuring positive coverage on its news website Walla.

Donald Trump Jumps to Netanyahu’s Defense

The trials have not only shaken Israeli politics but also caught the attention of former US President Donald Trump, who called the ongoing trials a “politically motivated witch hunt”.

Speaking at a rally in Florida this week, Trump said:

What’s happening to Bibi (Netanyahu) is a disgrace! This is a politically motivated trial just like they tried with me! They should cancel this whole thing!

Trump’s comments have drawn global media attention, linking Netanyahu’s legal troubles to a wider narrative of conservative leaders facing legal challenges.

Will Netanyahu Lose His Seat as Prime Minister?

According to Israeli law, Netanyahu does not have to step down unless he is convicted in court and all appeals are exhausted. However, if convicted, he could face years in prison and a ban from holding public office for at least 7 years.

The Israeli Supreme Court will have the final say on whether he must immediately leave office post-conviction.

At present, Netanyahu continues to serve as PM, actively attending court hearings, and defending himself both legally and politically.

Growing Protests in Israel

Meanwhile, thousands of Israeli citizens have taken to the streets, accusing Netanyahu of eroding democratic institutions to shield himself from accountability. This has further intensified the political turmoil.
