Air India Crash Death Toll Rises to 270: Are Authorities Hiding the Real Numbers?

Ahmedabad, June 16, 2025 | Bureau Report: Jagdish Teli : India is reeling from one of the most catastrophic aviation disasters in recent memory. The death toll from the Air India Flight AI171 crash in Ahmedabad has officially risen to 270, but growing concerns among families and observers suggest the real number could be even higher.

As authorities continue to recover remains and identify victims, frustration is mounting over alleged government silence and lack of transparency.

Death Toll Reaches 270—and Still Rising

According to Gujarat health officials, at least 270 people have now been confirmed dead, including both passengers and civilians on the ground. This includes:

  • 241 passengers and crew members
  • 29 individuals on the ground, killed when the aircraft crashed into a residential neighborhood.

Sources report that DNA identification is still underway, and dozens of bodies remain severely burnt, complicating the process.

Are the Authorities Hiding Casualty Figures?

Many grieving families are alleging that the government is not being fully transparent about the true number of casualties.

“They’re not answering our questions. We just want the truth,” said a relative of a missing passenger.

Delays in handing over the remains, limited access to information, and shifting figures have only fueled public skepticism.

Human Tragedies Behind the Numbers

Among the victims:

  • Harshit and Pooja Patel, a young couple returning to Gujarat, were both confirmed dead — but only one body has been identified so far.
  • Arjun Patoliya, who had just performed his wife’s last rites in Varanasi, was on his way back to London, leaving behind two daughters.

The heartbreak is compounded by uncertainty, as families wait days for any official updates.

DNA Matching and Identification Underway

Health teams are relying on DNA testing to confirm identities. Over 32 severely charred bodies remain unidentified. Experts warn it could take up to 72 hours or longer for final results.

One known survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, is undergoing treatment. He was reportedly pulled from the wreckage by locals within minutes of the crash.

Black Boxes Recovered, Investigation Begins

Both the Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder have been recovered and sent for analysis. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Indian authorities have begun a joint investigation.

Meanwhile, India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered safety inspections of all Boeing 787 Dreamliners currently in operation.

Call for Accountability and Transparency

As the investigation continues, aviation experts and families are demanding a public report, faster identification, and better crisis communication.

The question remains:

Is the government intentionally downplaying the disaster? Or is the system simply overwhelmed?

Until all answers are revealed, doubt, grief, and mistrust will continue to hover over the tragedy.
