Government Takes Strict Action Against Obscene OTT Content, 5 Apps Blocked
In a major crackdown on allegedly obscene and objectionable content on digital platforms, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) has ordered the blocking of five OTT applications. The move comes after repeated warnings were allegedly ignored by these platforms, which were accused of streaming vulgar and sexually explicit content.
According to government officials, the blocked platforms include MoodXVIP, Koyal PlayPro, Digi Movieplex, Feel, and Jugnu App. Authorities claim these OTT platforms were repeatedly publishing content that violated digital media guidelines and ethical standards.
The government’s action signals a stricter approach toward regulating OTT platforms and maintaining public decency in the digital space.
Allegations of Explicit and Vulgar Content
Officials stated that several shows available on these platforms contained excessive sexual innuendos and extended explicit scenes. Investigations reportedly found that many of the programs lacked meaningful storytelling or social context and instead focused primarily on provocative visuals and suggestive content.
Regulators observed that such content was being promoted aggressively on these platforms, raising concerns about its impact on viewers and compliance with existing digital media rules.
Action Under IT Act and IT Rules 2021
The blocking order has been issued under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, along with provisions of the Information Technology Rules, 2021.
Section 69A empowers the central government to block online content in the interest of national security, public order, and public decency. Authorities stated that the action was taken after due process and review of the content hosted on these platforms.
Over 100 Web Series Removed After Complaints
The Ministry revealed that these platforms had previously received multiple warnings and were directed to comply with the Code of Ethics for digital publishers.
The Digital Publisher Content Grievance Council had also recommended edits in several shows, describing certain content as “tasteless and bizarre.” Following these directions, more than 100 web series were reportedly removed from the platforms.
However, authorities later found that some operators attempted to bypass monitoring systems by shifting their content to new domains and continuing to stream similar material.
Platforms Allegedly Continued Content Through New Domains
Investigators said that even after certain domains were blocked in March 2024, the same content allegedly reappeared on newly created websites and alternate domains.
This attempt to evade regulatory action reportedly prompted the government to take stricter enforcement measures and permanently block the OTT applications involved.
Earlier Crackdowns on Similar Platforms
This is not the first time the government has taken action against OTT services over explicit content. In July 2025, several apps and websites were also banned for allegedly hosting obscene or pornographic material.
Officials have reiterated that while OTT platforms enjoy creative freedom, they must operate within the framework of law and adhere to ethical standards set under India’s digital media regulations.
Debate Over Regulation and Freedom of Expression
The government’s latest move has reignited debate over the balance between creative freedom and responsible content regulation on OTT platforms.
While supporters argue that stricter regulation is necessary to maintain public decency and protect audiences, critics warn that excessive control could affect freedom of expression in the digital entertainment industry.
A Clear Message for Digital Platforms
With this action, the government has sent a clear message that online platforms must comply with Indian laws and ethical guidelines. Digital publishers are expected to exercise responsibility along with creative freedom when producing and streaming content.
The key question now is whether this crackdown will reshape the type of content being produced on OTT platforms and whether self-regulation within the industry will become stricter in the coming months.
