Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport — the busiest in India — turned into chaos this week as over 800 flights faced massive delays and diversions.
What was officially called a technical glitch in Air Traffic Control’s Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS) might actually be something far more alarming — a cyber assault on Indian skies.
According to aviation experts, the disruption bears all the signs of GPS Spoofing, a dangerous form of hacking where fake satellite signals trick aircraft navigation systems into showing false locations. Simply put — planes think they are somewhere else, and that’s enough to create havoc in mid-air.
Flights Delayed, Passengers Panic
The week began with multiple reports of planes drifting off their intended route and pilots struggling to correct course. On Tuesday, Delhi became the second most disrupted airport in the world, with at least seven flights diverted to Jaipur and Lucknow. By Friday, more than 800 flights were delayed.
Is China or Pakistan Behind This Cyber Chaos?
Intelligence inputs hint at the involvement of state-sponsored cyber groups from countries such as China, Pakistan, Iran and Turkey — all of which have been accused of spreading misinformation and targeting critical infrastructure through asymmetric warfare.
Between November 2023 and February 2025, India recorded 465 cases of GPS spoofing along the India-Pakistan border near Amritsar and Jammu.
Cyber-security agencies say this could be part of a larger strategy to confuse military and civil aviation systems — creating a silent war in the sky.
What Exactly Is GPS Spoofing?
GPS Spoofing is a digital deception attack. Hackers send fake satellite signals to trick navigation devices — whether it’s your phone or an aircraft’s autopilot — into believing they are in a different place.
For example, your map suddenly showing you 5 km away from your real location — that’s spoofing. In aviation, such errors can send an aircraft off its route, risking mid-air collisions or even controlled crashes.
In 2024 alone, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) logged over 430,000 spoofing and jamming incidents worldwide — up by 62% from 2023.
Delhi Under Double Pressure — Tech Glitch or Cyber Hit?
A senior DGCA official revealed that during the incident, the Navigation Integrity Category Value — which measures positional accuracy — dropped from a normal level of 8 to 0. That’s not a minor glitch; that’s a clear sign of interference.
Investigations are ongoing, but the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has already taken up the probe after several pilots confirmed erratic navigation signals within 60 nautical miles of Delhi.
Runway Under Upgrade — Vulnerability Increases
To make matters worse, Delhi Airport’s Instrument Landing System (ILS) on the main runway is currently shut for upgrades to CAT-III standards. This means planes are relying purely on satellite-based navigation, which is exactly what GPS spoofing targets — leaving aircraft exposed to false data.
Global Warning Signs
India isn’t alone. In December 2024, a Kazakhstan plane crash that killed 38 people was traced to Russian GPS interference. In March 2025, an Indian Air Force transport aircraft delivering relief aid in Myanmar reportedly encountered China-linked spoofing attempts.
Even friendly GPS jammers deployed along the India-Pakistan border to block enemy signals sometimes end up interfering with domestic flight paths over North India.
The Silent War in the Sky
Whether the Delhi disruption was a technical fault or a cyber invasion, one fact is clear — India’s airspace is no longer immune to digital warfare.
Experts warn that as airports depend more on satellite navigation, cybersecurity must become part of air safety itself. Every delay, every diverted plane, could now be a signal — not just a glitch.
