Supreme Court Seeks Centre’s Response on Sonam Wangchuk’s Arrest, No Relief Granted Yet

In a significant hearing today, the Supreme Court of India sought a response from the Central Government and the Ladakh administration regarding the arrest of renowned environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk — but declined to grant any interim relief.

The petition was filed by Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali Angmo, challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) and demanding his immediate release.

During Monday’s hearing, the apex court asked the Centre and Ladakh authorities to submit their replies, while refusing to issue any interim orders at this stage.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for October 14.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Geetanjali, argued before the bench that the family has not been informed of the reasons behind Wangchuk’s detention. On behalf of the government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated that the reasons for his detention have already been conveyed to Wangchuk and that providing a copy to his wife is under consideration.

Wangchuk was arrested under the NSA on September 26, just two days after a massive protest in Ladakh demanding statehood for the region and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The protest turned violent, leading to four deaths and injuries to nearly 90 people.

All eyes are now on the October 14 hearing, which could decide whether Sonam Wangchuk will be released or remain under detention.
