Nagpur’s Divya Deshmukh Crowned Women’s Chess World Champion, CM Fadnavis says: “She’s made Maharashtra proud”

Nagpur | Khabar 24 Express Desk : A proud chapter has been added to the history of Indian chess! 19-year-old Divya Deshmukh from Nagpur, Maharashtra has clinched the FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup 2025 title, becoming the first Indian woman ever to win this prestigious championship.

In a thrilling all-Indian final, Divya outplayed seasoned Grandmaster Koneru Humpy. While the classical games ended in draws, Divya showcased nerves of steel and strategic brilliance in the rapid tie-breaks, defeating Humpy 1.5–0.5 and etching her name in history.


India’s First-Ever Women’s World Cup Champion

With this monumental victory, Divya has made the entire nation proud. She’s now the first Indian woman to lift the Women’s World Cup and also earned a direct qualification to the 2026 Women’s Candidates Tournament, which decides the challenger for the World Champion title.


Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Reacts

Soon after the win, Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis congratulated Divya via video call and praised her for her incredible achievement:

“This is a proud moment not just for Maharashtra but for all of India. Divya Deshmukh has proven that Indian youth can conquer global platforms with sheer talent and dedication.”

He also announced that the Maharashtra government will officially honour Divya for this historic win.


A Family Bursting with Joy

Divya’s family is overjoyed. Her grandmother, Dr. Kamal Deshmukh, shared:

“It’s still unbelievable… Divya has worked so hard. Nothing comes without discipline, and she has followed that since childhood.”

Her aunt, Smita Deshmukh, expressed immense pride, saying Divya always spent more time with her chessboard than anything else, and that her win is a celebration for all of Nagpur and India.
