Lokpal to Buy 7 BMW Cars Worth Over ₹5 Crore — Anti-Corruption Body Faces Questions Over Luxury Purchase

भ्रष्टाचार से लड़ने वाले Lokpal को BMW की जरूरत टेंडर निकाला

New Delhi | Khabar 24 Express : India’s top anti-corruption watchdog, the Lokpal of India, has now found itself at the center of controversy — not for probing corruption, but for a luxury car purchase. The Lokpal office has issued a tender to buy seven BMW 330 Li sedan cars, estimated to cost over ₹5 crore in total.

According to the tender issued on October 16, the cars will be the BMW 330 Li (Long Wheelbase) variant — a premium executive sedan known for its comfort and advanced safety features. The bidding process will begin from November 7, and once finalized, BMW will also provide a week-long training to Lokpal drivers and staff on handling and safety operations of these vehicles.

Why Does the Lokpal Need Luxury Cars?

The Lokpal’s administrative wing has clarified that this purchase is meant to strengthen its logistic and operational infrastructure. However, this move has sparked sharp criticism on social media and among transparency activists, who question whether a body tasked with fighting corruption should spend taxpayers’ money on luxury vehicles.

Critics argue that such a decision goes against the very spirit of transparency and austerity, which the Lokpal represents. Many have asked, “Is this a necessary administrative expense or an unnecessary show of extravagance?”

About the Lokpal of India

The Lokpal is India’s national anti-corruption authority, empowered to investigate complaints against the Prime Minister, Ministers, Members of Parliament, and government officials. It was established under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, a result of the Anna Hazare-led Jan Lokpal Movement of 2011.

Currently, the Lokpal is headed by Justice Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar, former judge of the Supreme Court of India. Its jurisdiction also covers organizations receiving more than ₹10 lakh in government or foreign funding.

Public Reaction

Public opinion on this move is divided. Some view it as a modernization step for efficient functioning, while others call it a misuse of public funds. For an institution that investigates corruption and misuse of power, optics matter — and this decision could influence its credibility in the public eye.

As one citizen wrote on X (formerly Twitter):

“When the anti-corruption watchdog rides BMWs bought with taxpayers’ money, how do we trust it to monitor others?”

Conclusion

The Lokpal’s decision has once again ignited debate over government spending priorities. Whether this will enhance its efficiency or dent its public image remains to be seen.
